"It was just last month I was in this very room congratulating Officer Eyer for becoming officer of the month in April," Police Chief Johnny Jennings said. "And he certainly dedicated his life and gave his life to serve our citizens."

The fund would also be used to support impact agencies and their employees. By the late-19th century, Charlotte continued to grow and its trajectory centered on industry and distribution. The many textile plants, combined with corporations such as Charlotte Chemical Laboratories, the Lance Corporation, and the Allison-Erwin Company, had strong influences on Charlottes pre-bank economy. The Charlotte-Mecklenburg area began to flourish, however, during the 1980s and 1990s as the county evolved into a financial powerhouse. In 1991, the merger of National Bank and C&S Sovran created NationsBank—and soon after, Bank of America and Wachovia Corporation–made Charlotte home as well. Today, Charlotte is second only to New York City as the leading financial-banking capital of the United States.

Task force members returned fire and killed the suspect in the home's front yard, he said. Jennings said the fallen officers were "heroes that were just simply trying to keep our community safe." Charlotte Mecklenburg Fraternal Order of Police President Daniel Redford said the suspect's record speaks to the heroism displayed by law enforcement Monday. "They are heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice, rushing into harm’s way to protect us," the president said in a statement.
Clerk to the Board
The first seven-member board took office in 1986 and in 1994, the first nine-member Board took office. Six members are elected by districts and three are elected at-large. During the Revolution, the people of Charlotte and the surrounding area stirred up resistance to the British crown, and despite the namesake and heritage of the original Charlotte Town, the area became disgruntled with King George III. On May 20, 1775, the “Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence” and it officially severed the area’s ties with Britain. Even though the North Carolina flag proclaims the May 20th date as the state’s institution, historians continue to debate the veracity of the Mecklenburg Declaration (or “Meck Dec”).
In these trying times, Gaston County stands in unity with our local and federal law enforcement families. We are committed to providing support and assistance in any way we can. Live on WBTV, Tyler Wilson described officers streaming into his home, including one officer who appeared to be a sniper using his window during an active shootout Monday afternoon. At one point, Wilson said he saw one officer dragged through his home by his shoulders.
The Board consists of nine commissioners - six representing districts and three elected at-large - that are elected in November of even-numbered years. A Commissioner At-Large is a designation for Mecklenburg County commissioners who are elected or appointed to represent the whole membership of the County. Charlotte community mourns loss of officers in deadly shooting: 'No apologies for my tears'
Lyles was among the many public officials who reacted to Monday's shooting. Court records show Hughes has a pending case from late 2021 out of Person County for possession of a firearm by a felon and possession of marijuana. A warrant shows the Person County Sheriff's Office found Hughes with a handgun on him.
During that shootout, authorities struck the suspect, identified as 39-year-old Terry Clark Hughes, and he was pronounced deceased in the front yard. The secretary of the state Adult Corrections Department identified two of the other people killed as Samuel Poloche and William "Alden" Elliott, both of whom had been with the department for 14 years and were on the marshals task force. The city's police chief announced Monday night that a Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officer who had been wounded, Joshua Eyer, had also died.
"These men and women who all responded to this incident yesterday were courageous, because they knew what they were getting into and still showed up anyway," Redford said. "[The suspect is] where he belongs. I quite frankly don't have anything to say about him other than he deserves everything he got." Court records show many, but not all, of the charges out of Mecklenburg County were dismissed. There are three pending orders for arrest tied to the remaining charges, including possession of marijuana, fleeing and eluding arrest and possession with the intent to sell or deliver marijuana. Those arrest orders, generally, suggest Hughes failed to appear for a court date.

He also called for more funding for law enforcement and for Congress to do more to combat gun violence. At the time of the shootings on Monday, the task force was trying to serve warrants out of Lincoln, Mecklenburg and Person counties, according to Beam, who has an officer on the task force, too. Contributions may also be donated to the families of the four officers killed, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department said Tuesday.
