Fostering Wellness, Creativity, and Community

These can be divided into the group of buildings along the riverfront, Greenwich Park and the Georgian and Victorian town centre. Greenwich is bordered by Deptford Creek and Deptford to the west; the residential area of Westcombe Park to the east; the River Thames to the north; and the A2 and Blackheath to the south. The Greenwich Peninsula, also known as North Greenwich, forms the main projection of the town (to the northeast of the town centre). By the time of the Restoration, the Palace of Placentia had fallen into disuse and was pulled down. New buildings began to be established as a grand palace for Charles II, but only the King Charles block was completed. Charles II also redesigned and replanted Greenwich Park and founded and built the Royal Observatory.

The Village, at the palm of your hands

To the west, the arthouse Greenwich Cinema is on Greenwich High Road, while the nearby Greenwich Playhouse closed in 2012. During the reign of Ethelred the Unready, the Danish fleet anchored in the River Thames off Greenwich for over three years, with the army being encamped on the hill above. From here they attacked Kent and, in the year 1012, took the city of Canterbury, making Archbishop Alphege their prisoner for seven months in their camp at Greenwich, at that time within the county of Kent. They stoned him to death for his refusal to allow his ransom (3,000 pieces of silver) to be paid; and kept his body, until the blossoming of a stick that had been immersed in his blood. For this miracle his body was released to his followers, he achieved sainthood for his martyrdom and, in the 12th century, the parish church was dedicated to him. The present church on the site west of the town centre is St Alfege's Church, designed by Nicholas Hawksmoor in 1714 and completed in 1718.

Visitors will also be able to see Orazio Gentileschi’s Joseph and Potiphar’s Wife displayed in this building for the first time since 1650. The painting, which is part of the Royal Collection, was one of a sequence commissioned for the Queen’s House in Greenwich by King Charles I and Queen Henrietta Maria. Ultimately it was because the palace and its grounds were a royal possession (with a useful hill) that it was chosen as the site for Charles II's Royal Observatory, from which stemmed Greenwich's subsequent global role as originator of the modern Prime Meridian. Greenwich (/ˈɡrɛnɪtʃ/ ⓘ GREN-itch, /-ɪdʒ/ -ij, /ˈɡrɪn-/ GRIN-[1][2]) is a town in south-east London, England, within the ceremonial county of Greater London.

Youth Community Center

These buildings became the Royal Naval College in 1873, and they remained a military education establishment until 1998 when they passed into the hands of the Greenwich Foundation. The historic rooms within these buildings remain open to the public; other buildings are used by University of Greenwich and Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance. The town became a popular resort in the 18th century and many grand houses were built there, such as Vanbrugh Castle (1717) established on Maze Hill, next to the park. The maritime connections of Greenwich were celebrated in the 20th century, with the siting of the Cutty Sark and Gipsy Moth IV next to the river front, and the National Maritime Museum in the former buildings of the Royal Hospital School in 1934. Greenwich House, the neighborhood’s premier social service provider, offers programs for all ages, including arts and music education that provide thousands of New Yorkers with enrichment and cultural experiences. Our centers offer social, educational, physical and cultural programs to engage members, build community, promote healthy and active lifestyles, and serve hot, nutritious meals.

Two multi-service organizations, Greenwich House and the Caring Community (TCC), will more efficiently and effectively meet the needs of Greenwich Village seniors by consolidating their management and operations. Specifically, TCC will be established as an affiliate corporation of Greenwich House, and its four senior centers will be solely managed by Greenwich House. The consolidation of administrative functions will increase operating efficiencies, reduce costs through bulk purchasing arrangements, and consolidate many “back-office” functions such as accounting, human resources, information technology, and fundraising.

Millennium Leisure Park

No matter what program individuals participate in, everyone receives the care and support they need to live a more fulfilling life. Today Greenwich House provides art education, senior service and behavioral health programs including an after-school, summer arts camp, nursery school, senior centers and senior health clinic, substance abuse clinics and a program for children who have suffered from abuse. Greenwich House and TCC share common missions, operate similar programs, and serve overlapping populations. Greenwich House provides vital services and programs in mental health for seniors, chemical dependency, arts, and nursery school services.

Like Diana Prince, Greenwich House founder Mary Kingsbury Simkhovitch was a hero to many, and she was featured in a comic book. Simkhovitch was honored with inclusion in the 55th issue of Wonder Woman which was published on July 23, 1952. Her comic-character likeness was featured in the “Wonder Women of History” section which ran throughout the comic’s first year. The three-page comic strip shows Simkhovitch surveying the problems in her neighborhood, fundraising to start Greenwich House, teaching cooking classes, and writing books.

Health Services

Today, Greenwich House provides early childhood education, after-school and summer arts programs, performing, visual and music arts and education, mental and behavioral health services for toddler, children, adolescents, adults and seniors. Social services continued to expand to address the needs of underserved age demographics. Earlier, Greenwich House opened the first official day-care center for children in 1920 to help a new community of working mothers. As concerns about juvenile delinquency rose in the latter half of the twentieth century, Greenwich House was one of the few places that provided activities and extracurricular education for teenagers. Greenwich House also turned to the neighborhood’s aging community, starting an “Over 65 Club” in 1955 and then its first Senior Center in 1966.

Growing With the Needs of the Neighborhood

The building was built with a shaft for an elevator, but no actual elevator, as the new technology was too expensive at the time. Last week, Greenwich House’s four senior centers opened their doors to seniors for the first time in over 14 months. For Hellen and Harvey Osgood, who were eager to re-connect in person with their friends and the Greenwich House staff, it was a long time coming.

The palace was the principal residence of Henry VII whose sons Henry (later Henry VIII) and Edmund Tudor were born here, and baptised in St Alphege's. Henry favoured Greenwich over nearby Eltham Palace, the former principal royal palace in south London, but which was not on the River Thames and so was less accessible. Henry extended Greenwich Palace and it became his principal London seat until Whitehall Palace was built in the 1530s.

“The value proposition here is the history and the importance pottery has played in American ceramics. The location and the historic building distinguish us from other places.” A lot of for-profit ceramic studios have started but they do not match the unique community of Greenwich House and the experience (professionals working alongside beginners) that people are looking for. “There is a seriousness of purpose as well as those who are seeking the therapeutic nature of clay.

These services include individual, group, family, and couple therapies as well as medication management. The Center also is a designated Opioid Overdose Prevention Program providing a harm reduction approach to persons with mental health and substance use challenges. Around the covered Greenwich Market, Georgian and Victorian architecture dominates in the town centre which spreads to the west of the park and Royal Naval College. Up the hill from the centre, there are many streets of Georgian houses, including the Fan Museum, on Croom's Hill. Nearby, at the junction of Croom's Hill with Nevada Street, is Greenwich Theatre; at the eastern end of Nevada Street is the Greenwich Tavern.

Greenwich House provides health services addressing addictions, trauma, anxiety, and depression. “We stay true to our core mission of being progressive minded and serving the deep needs of this population,” Bloch said. Founded on Thanksgiving Day in 1902, Greenwich House opened its doors as a settlement house to help New York’s increasing immigrant population adjust to life in a new country. The demand for music education was so high that Greenwich House expanded its Music School to a new building. In 1917, the renowned architectural team, Delano & Aldrich, designed Greenwich House’s new headquarters at 27 Barrow Street. It was financed by Gertrude Payne Whitney, and the interior was decorated with hand-painted murals by famous artists, including  Daniel Chester French, John Sloan, and James Fraser.
